Beautiful music filled the nave last Sunday during our service of Choral Evensong. Evensong is a treasured part of the Anglican tradition of music and liturgy. It is a service of Evening Prayer with prayers and canticles sung by a choir. Evening prayer is one of the daily prayer services from the Book of Common Prayer, adapted from the Medieval monastic hours. It is a time for reflection and thanksgiving at the end of the day. It includes many ancient and beloved prayers and canticles such as Phos Hilaron, Nunc Dimittis, and the Magnificat.
This service was preceded by an organ concert given by Christ Church Director of Music and Liturgy Mr. Jonathan A. Poe on our C.B. Fisk Organ (Op. 115). He played a selection of pieces composed during times of war and conflict, expressing humankind’s yearning for peace and renewal.
The Christ Church Choir performs Choral Evensong every quarter. Please join us for our next service on Sunday, December 14 at 5:30, which will be a service of Lessons and Carols as we observe the season of Advent and prepare for the celebration of Christmas.
